About our Beef

We are excited to offer you our
pasture raised, grass-fed Wagyu-Angus beef. We began raising cattle in 2020, and have put a lot of love, care and hard work into our animals. We are constantly learning and striving towards raising the best meat we can, so you can feel good about where your meat comes from and how it is raised. Read on to learn more about our beef and our farming philosophy.

We are raising our cattle in a way that honours their life and the land they live on. Our priority is the health of our animals, the health of the soil, and the health of those who eat our food. For that reason, our cattle are pasture-raised in a rotational grazing system, and offered omega-rich, non-GMO, grain-free hemp on a free-choice basis.

Each animal we harvest offers us opportunities to learn and grow. We use these lessons to adapt and solidify our feeding practices in order to constantly improve the nutrition of our animals and quality of our meat.

What is rotational grazing?

Rotational grazing is a way of managing pasture to promote plant growth and soil health. Our cattle spend their days on a section of pasture, grazing on grass (and other plants) and supplemented with minerals and salt to ensure they are getting all the nutrients they need. Every few days we move them to a different section of the pasture, giving the animals a fresh supply of grass and preventing overgrazing. They rotate through the different areas of pasture, allowing plants to recover between grazings, promoting root growth and contributing to soil health. Because it all comes down to the soil.

What is Wagyu?

The term Wagyu refers to the breed of the cattle, which originated in Japan. You may have heard of Wagyu, renowned for its tenderness, marbling, and flavour. Typically, Wagyu is fed large amounts of grain to accomplish that high degree of marbling and fattiness. Because ours eat primarily grass, you will not get the same marbling and tenderness as conventional Wagyu, but rather a leaner, more natural tasting meat. Our beef is 87% Wagyu and 13% Black Angus. The Wagyu genetics offer our meat unique flavour and increased health benefits, while the Black Angus genetics help the cattle to gain weight more efficiently, something that the Wagyu breed is unable to do on a grass diet.

What is Grass Fed?

There is little consensus as to what constitutes “grass fed”. To some, it means the cattle eat exclusively grass. To others, it means they eat grass for part of their lives, and are finished on grain.

Here’s how it applies to our beef: our cattle spend their entire lives free ranging on pasture, eating mostly grass and plants. Strictly speaking however, our meat is not 100% grass fed. In addition to minerals and salt, we also offer our cattle an omega-rich, non-GMO, grain-free hemp feed on a free-choice basis. This is a nutritious way to help them put on some weight and create a more tender meat. They are still out on pasture, and free to eat as much grass as they like. They are never confined in feed pens, or given hormones or antibiotics.

Wagyu typically take longer to gain weight, and traditionally are fed large amounts of grain to fatten them and create the marbling effect Wagyu is known for. While this is not our approach, we do want to ensure we are doing the animal justice by creating the best quality meat possible, while prioritizing their health and well-being. We hope our approach will offer the best of both worlds - healthy, happy animals that give us delicious, nutritious meat.
